What is a General Surgeon?
The "General Surgeon" is a Medical Doctor that has completed a Residency or specialty training in the field of surgery. This training which takes at least five years encompasses the entire body. While this training and the exams include Orthopedics and Neurosurgery, the word "General" in the title "General Surgeon" has become somewhat of a misnomer in this era of specialized medicine. The practice of the average general surgeon now encompasses the following: The alimentary tract ( Esophagus, Stomach, Small and Large Bowel), the abdomen and its contents, including the pelvis, the breast, the skin, soft tissue and musculoskeletal system, the chest, the head and neck, the vascular system, the endocrine system, Oncology, Trauma and Critically ill patients.
