AN INTERNATIONAL ENDOVASCULAR SYMPOSIUM IN SOUTH AFRICA

SUN CITY

Sat 11 –Sun 12 August 2007

With International Faculty:
    George Andros Los Angeles, USA
    Martin Schillinger Vienna, Austria
    Tom Bower Rochester, USA

THE SOUTH AFRICAN ENDOVASCULAR WORKING GROUP

Established in 2004, the SAEWG is a collaboration between the Vascular Surgical Society of Southern Africa (VASSA), the South African Interventional Cardiology Society (SASCI) and the South African Interventional Radiology Society (SAIVRS). It seeks to promote co-operation between the various disciplines involved in vascular care, particularly by providing educational forums where a cross-pollination of ideas and experience can occur. The first of these was held at Kwa Maritane in 2006 and focused purely on carotid interventions. This year’s symposium will address a far wider range of subjects.

THE 2007 ENDOVASCULAR SYMPOSIUM

The Symposium will take place at Sun City immediately after the VASSA congress (August 9-10). The first session will commence at 0830 on Saturday 11 August. The meeting will end at 1230 on Sunday 12 August.

INTERNATIONAL FACULTY

  1. Professor George Andros is a vascular surgeon from Los Angeles with a special interest in diabetic vascular problems and interventions for limb salvage in diabetics.
  2. Professor Martin Schillinger is director of endovascular interventions at the Medical University of Vienna. His particular interests include carotid and lower limb interventions and the problem of restenosis.

  3. Professor Tom Bower is Professor of Vasccular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA. He will address the role of endovascular therapy for venous disease.

LOCAL FACULTY

A local faculty of vascular surgeons, interventional cardiologists and interventional radiologists has been assembled.

PROGRAMME

Six Keynote Addresses will cover the following subjects:
  1. Advances in vascular imaging
  2. Advances in stent technology: how to choose the right stent for the right situation
  3. How should we treat the SFA in 2007?
  4. Tibial angioplasty: When, Who and How?
  5. The aetiology, prevention and management of re-stenosis
  6. Endovascular treatment of chronic venous disease in the lower limb
A mini-symposium on the complications of carotid stenting will include talks on interventions for acute stroke as well as a panel discussion.

A large “How I do it” section will feature endovascular procedures presented in detail by various experts who will describe their “tips and tricks” to achieve the best results.
These will include:

Carotid stenting by a vascular surgeon Thrombolysis for DVT
Carotid stenting by a cardiologist Recanalisation of the SFA
Thrombin injection of false aneurysms Sub-intimal angioplasty
Recanalisation of an Iliac occlusion Renal artery stenting
Placement & retrieval of an IVC filter Tibial angioplasty
Laser ablation of the saphenous vein Internal iliac embolisation

Further papers will address the endovascular management of ruptured AAA, thoracic aortic emergencies, popliteal aneurysms and profunda stenoses.

ENDOVASCULAR TRAINING SUITE

An endovascular training facility utilizing virtual reality simulation will be in operation throughout the symposium. Delegates wishing to use this facility will have to pre-book specific times at the registration desk.
